Where to see Shibuya for free

You cannot go up SHIBUYA SKY without a ticket, but you can look over the Scramble Crossing for nothing. The connecting walkways around Shibuya Station and the rooftop at Miyashita Park are both public and both give you the intersection from above. They are lower and far less dramatic than a rooftop 229 metres up, and I would rather say that plainly than pretend they are the same thing.

The two that are worth your time

The connecting walkways at the station look straight along the Crossing and are the closest thing to the classic frame that costs nothing. The Miyashita Park rooftop is a green deck a few minutes north, open to anyone, and better for sitting than for photographing. Neither gives you the drop, the open edge or the horizon. They give you the crowd, which is most of the appeal.

The guided version of the same idea

One tour on this site skips the deck entirely: a 90-minute Shibuya highlights walk at $13 that uses a free public viewpoint over the Crossing instead of a paid ticket, and includes food and drinks. When to pay instead

If the sky is clear and you have one evening, the free viewpoints will feel like a compromise and you will know it while you are standing there. That case is argued properly on is it worth it.

No. Entry to the 46th-floor gallery and the rooftop is ticketed and timed. The shopping floors of Shibuya Scramble Square below are open to anyone.

Is there a free view of the Shibuya Crossing?

Yes, from the station connecting walkways and from the Miyashita Park rooftop. Both are public and both are much lower than the deck.

Is the free view good enough?
