Is SHIBUYA SKY worth it?

On a clear evening, yes, and I say that as someone who lives ten minutes away and has been up in every season. The open corner with no glass, 229 metres above the Crossing, is the only place in Tokyo where you look straight down into the thing the city is famous for. It is not worth it in heavy rain, under low cloud, or if heights and dense crowds are things you avoid — the rooftop closes for weather, the refund does not exist, and the corner everyone photographs has a queue.

What you are actually paying for

Three things, in order of how much they matter. The open air, because the outer edge at the photographed corner has no glass and nothing between you and the drop. The angle, because Scramble Square sits directly over the Crossing rather than a train ride away from it. And the CLOUD HAMMOCK, which sounds like a gimmick and then turns out to be the ten minutes people describe afterwards. At ¥2,700 before 15:00 or ¥3,400 after, that is a fair trade. When it is not worth it

Heavy rain or strong wind. The rooftop closes and you are left with the indoor gallery, having paid full price with no refund.
Low overcast. You are inside the cloud rather than above the city. Nothing to photograph, nothing to see.
If heights or crowds are a problem. The edge is genuinely open and the good corner is genuinely busy.
If the budget is tight. The station walkways and the Miyashita Park rooftop cost nothing — lower, less dramatic, and covered on free views in Shibuya.
